'Glorified' - Fruitdisplay

Description

1mm frosted polypropylene sheets, purple ribbons.

The project asked for a 'container/display item for fruit'. Which in my opinion is really a way of saying 'glorified fruit-bowl', hense the name. It can also be taken on the positive note that the female shape IS an item worthy of worship and glory.

I went with the corset design because it is the very symbol of restriction, keeping something inside it. But there's also a beauty to it, it is an artefact in itself. The idea with the butterflies was that they mimic the shape of a woman when laced up but at the same time they are something free that can never be restricted.

What I really wanted to do was get stencils of butterflies and cut them out of the plastic, so that the colour added to the piece would be from the fruit itself but due to illness (3 week project, I started one week late) and the fact that this is not the time of year for butterfly-stencils (the craft shop is all raindeer, holly and Santa-Clauses now...) I had to settle for these silly painted things (they're stick-ons...*wince*). I am trying to look at this as 'only' a prototype and plan to make my own stencils so I can make some of these for female relations as Christmas presents.

I know what you mean about just fulfilling the requirements, i just finished a sculpture class and i rarely had the time to put many of my own thoughts in the pieces. I really like this piece, and i think the stickers (?) go well with it, being filled only with oranges. I like lots of colors, so if there would have been cut-outs instead (adding more orange instead of the yellow purple and blue (btw, nice way of using repetition in the orange one, just noticed that)) i wouldnt have liked it as much. I think this is a very succesfull piece and i cant wait to see more of your art!
